Hoi iedereen,

Met stomheid lees ik alle berichten op het internet over het feit dat Sketchflow niet toegankelijk is in Expression Studio 4 Premium. Ikzelf heb een MSDN Premium account en kom dus alleen in aanmerking voor de Premium-variant, terwijl Sketchflow alleen beschikbaar is in de Ultimate-variant.
Nu blijkt dat als je Expression Studio 3 ergens "in een doos" heb gekocht (retail), dan kun je de trial van Ultimate 4 installeren en krijg je een gratis upgrade.
Ik vind dit een rare zet van Microsoft. Niet dat je een gratis upgrade weg geeft, maar wel dat de MSDN Subscriptions genegeerd worden. Alsof we niet genoeg betalen hiervoor.

Met versie 4 hebben we maatregelen genomen om ons Design tool aanbod te vereenvoudigen en in lijn te brengen met onze andere toolsets zoals Visual Studio en MSDN. Met de recente lancering van Visual Studio hebben we de Professional, Premium en Ultimate versies geintroduceerd (elke versie met verschillende/meer functies met respectievelijke stijging) en Expression volgt dit model.

Klanten die Visual Studio Premium in de winkel hebben gekocht ontvangen in de komende tijd een aanbieding om Expression Ultimate aan te schaffen tegen een speciale prijs van € 249.95. Volume Licensing-klanten ontvangen 50% korting op aankoop van een Expression Ultimate licentie met Software Assurance. De Volume Licensing promotie zal over een paar maanden weergegeven worden in Volume Licensing prijslijst en natuurlijk houden alle MSDN Premium-klanten hun toegang tot SketchFlow in Expression Studio 3.

Maar het blijft toch jammer...

Niet om door te blijven gaan (of misschien toch nog een keer dan), maar je antwoord was niet een antwoord op mijn vraag. Ik zie hier een grote kans gemist.
Op de DevDays van dit jaar (en die van vorig jaar) werd hoog ingezet op Sketchflow. Ik zelf ben een grote fan ervan en probeer het in onze organisatie toegepast te krijgen. Dit wordt nu een heel stuk moeilijker vanwege de volgende twee belangrijkste redenen:
- Onlangs zijn we allemaal overgestapt op MSDN Premium (want hierin zat meer dan voldoende, ook Expression Studio). Een nieuwe extra investering komt niet geloofwaardig over. Sterker nog, ik krijg het gevoel dat we beet zijn genomen.
- We werken momenteel allemaal in Visual Studio 2010. We kunnen dan wel met Expression 3 werken, maar dan gaan we juist een stap terug in de tijd

I am compelled to respond (despite a very vocal set of protestations above) and express my disappointment and dismay that SketchFlow was removed from the new “Premium” SKU.
I want to be perfectly clear about this. The value to Microsoft of ensuring that more developers and designers have access to the broadest range of tools is to ensure that Silverlight continues to gain market-share and mind-share in what is an extremely fierce competitive landscape across PC, phone and digital entertainment devices. Surely, that is the end-goal that we (Microsoft, Partners & customers) should be striving towards rather than slicing and dicing a great product suite to satisfy some internal requirements.
I think this is nowhere more true than in the area of RIAs. Without SketchFlow it is going to be difficult to convince our customers to undertake or at the very least consider how a RIA could be different from a traditional web app. As a result, I am convinced this will stifle the uptake of Silverlight and serves none of us.

Yet another voice against the ridiculous move to leave Sketchflow out of Blend 4 Premium. After all the hype and pushing of it in Blend 3, you (MSFT, not John ) get people using it via their MSDN Premium accounts, and then take it away? Good luck with the adoption rate on that move. It was an interesting feature that had a chance to catch on... but isn't so compelling that teams will go re-license it at retail.
It strikes me as the type of feature that single dev/designer could use in their client work, really evangelizing the prototyping approach. But to only include it at the Ultimate level, aimed at large enterprise shops is a poor decision.

Well, I am also not happy that SketchFlow is only for the chosen ones :-) It is very nice product. Actually, kind of foundation for web development so they could really support any MSDN subscribers.. :-(

SketchFlow NOT included in Studio 4? WTF! I repeat.... WT...Freaking.... F! This is totally unacceptable. My development team purchased VS 2010 Premium w/ MSDN with the impression by Adam Kinney, Scott Guthrie, etc. that this would be included in the Premium package or some sort of free upgrade. I understand this is a Marketing thing, but come on! I believe, at very least, this should have been explained in detail before this release. John Papa... as a rep to give feedback to the team... Please please and please.... tell powers-at-be to fix this problem. Sorry for the rant. Besides this issue, I believe it is a very good product:) Thanks

Even kort mijn conclusie: voor een bedrijf dat Silverlight wil promoten is Microsoft niet echt positief bezig tegen de (kleinere) software ontwikkelaars die in feite hun achterban zijn.

En nu hou ik er over op!
